Day 1

Today is my first day in Denmark! It started with a stop in the Icelandic airport, which is beautiful! Huge visible beams, tall ceilings, plenty of windows, and wood floors which I just think is such a great idea. It was 6 in the morning in Iceland, which made it 2 in the morning East Coast time. After a sleepy flight to Copenhagen, I got off the plane and was greeted by Henrik – a friendly blonde friend of Annas who took my heavy bag and lead me to the train and bus. I got situated at the apartment (I am staying a floor above him with more lovely people), but couldn’t get into the room I was supposed to stay in because it was locked. As soon as we put my bags down by the couch he invited me to go for a run around these 5 man-made lakes in the middle of the city. Both Henrik and his friend were very fast, so the jog turned out to be a solid 6K sprint around the lakes. At about 6:00 PM Line (pronounced somewhere between “leen” and “leena”), my temporary roommate/host, took me to the store with her to get supplies for dinner. We had a traditional Danish dinner of meatballs, potatoes, and salad. We talked about our different holidays and compared pronunciation of words. It is very hard for Danish to say “dock” and “duck” differently… but almost impossible for me to say a single word of Danish! I learned a new word: “hyggelig”, which is supposed to be one of the hardest words to define but means something like “cozy and nice”. It can be used to describe a situation, a painting, a sweater, a movie… almost anything it seems.  Luckily right before dinner Henrik found a way to break into the room for me, so my bed will feel very hyggelig tonight.
